When Paul Harris, a Chicago Lawyer, founded Rotary in 1905, he envisioned a new kind of clubl that would kindle the fellowship and freindly spirit he knew from his youth in Vermont.  The initial members moved the meetings around their places of business; henc the name, "Rotary."

Over time, the organization grew to embrace the principles of community service and these soon extended to nationwide and international projects.

When The Rotary Foundation was started after World War II, major donations have been named for Rotary's founder.
