Chesapeake.Net to Offer High-Speed Internet to Southern Maryland
June 1 2001 Dunkirk, Maryland

Chesapeake.Net a.k.a. Southern Maryland Internet has entered into a long-term agreement with WorldCom that will enable high-speed broadband internet access in Southern Maryland by 4th quarter 2001. Fred Brechbiel, CEO of Chesapeake.Net says, "We are very pleased to be able to finally provide Southern Marylanders with a high quality, high-speed internet connection.  Once our network is in place, the amount of bandwidth available to Southern Maryland Businesses will be virtually limitless".

Chesapeake.Net will serve as the wireless internet backbone for the Southern Maryland Region.  The bandwidth will come directly from the internet backbone in Washington DC via WorldCom's Network Operation center and broadcast tower.  Once the backbone is in place, subscriber management will be provided by Cloudburst Broadband , another Southern Maryland Company that will purchase wireless bandwidth wholesale from Chesapeake.Net's Wireless backbone and distribute it to homes and businesses in the area.  Cloudburst Broadband has already successfully deployed wireless internet access to Marinas in the Chesapeake Bay and will use the same model to provide service to homes and businesses.

Wireless networks avoid many of the downfalls associated with DSL or Cable access.  First off, wireless broadband is much faster.  Up to 1 Mb/sec for residential use and up to 3 Mb/sec for commercial use.  Secondly, the bandwidth is synchronous.  In other words, you can upload data as fast as you can download it.  This is not the case with most forms of DSL and Cable internet.  That is why most businesses cannot use Cable or DSL and have to go to more reliable connections like wireless or T1 lines.  Thirdly, wireless broadband is a mobile technology.  As long as you have line-of-site to a transmitter, you can be on the internet up to 3 miles away.  Cable and  DSL technologies restrict users to the location where the "wire" is installed.

Chesapeake.Net is one of Southern Maryland's oldest and most widely used dialup Internet services.  They are the first to offer up the new wireless broadband service in the DC area.  The service is currently available in Dunkirk, MD and at several Marinas along the Chesapeake Bay.  As more sites come online, they will be announced at www.airchesapeake.com and www.cloudburstbroadband.net .  Mr Brechbiel says, " Its a win-win for everbody - especially our customers."
