Bess Internet Filtering FAQ
Q. What is Internet filtering?
A. Internet filtering is a process that prevents or blocks access to certain material on the Internet. Filtering is most commonly
used to prevent children from accessing inappropriate material and to keep employees productive on the Internet.
Q. What is server-based filtering?
A. Server-based filtering occurs on a central computer (server) on a local area network, or at the Internet Service Provider
(ISP). With server-based solutions, a site is blocked before it gets to the user's computer. It is the most efficient, least costly
and most reliable filtering solution. Computer-savvy kids cannot disable it.....and only
Chesapeake.Net
has it.
Q. What is client-based filtering?
A. Client-based filtering occurs on an individual computer. The filtering software and list of blocked sites are stored on the
user's computer. This was the first type of Internet filtering available to consumers. It is slow, prone to software problems,
and difficult to keep current. In addition, these types of filters are very easy to get around for those internet, computer savvy
kids you are trying to protect.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. To have your internet content automatically filtered by our exclusive Bess Proxy server, costs an additional $2.95 per
month per computer. Discount rates are available for offices or schools with over 25 computers to protect.

filtered, simply fill out our

Q. What is the difference between filtering service and filtering software?
A. Filtering services include the hardware, software, set-up on your network, automatic updates of the blocked-site lists,
software upgrades, system monitoring, and complete maintenance of the filtering and caching on your network.
Filtering software is like other software products: you need to load it onto each computer. You need to update the site lists,
install fixes and provide continuous maintenance. With filtering software on a network, you need to appoint a filtering software
administrator to learn and maintain the system for your organization, which is time consuming and costly.
Q. How is the service deployed?
A. The Bess internet filtering system is a subscription-based service sold to schools, libraries, businesses and to individual
Chesapeake.Net
subscribers.
Q. What makes a Web site inappropriate?
A. The Internet is a wonderful resources, but it also contains a vast amount of inappropriate information including pornography
and other material unsuitable for young people. For more information regarding the filtering policy used by Bess visit
N2H2's filtering methodology page
.
Q. Who decides which sites to block?
A. A large full-time team of dedicated professionals that review each site that is entered into the database. We do not use
keywords to determine which sites to block, this method would end up blocking valuable information. Reviewing sites
individually allows us to evaluate all material that might otherwise go unnoticed and unfiltered using a keyword method.
